Canada-European Union - Consultations on Possible Comprehensive Economic Agreement Negotiations with |

Closing date: January 20, 2009 The Government of Canada is seeking the views of Canadians on the scope of a possible comprehensive economic agreement between Canada and the European Union (EU). It is essential that the Government of Canada be fully aware of the interests and potential sensitivities of Canadians with respect to this initiative. We therefore welcome advice and views on any priorities, objectives and concerns relating to a possible comprehensive economic agreement with the EU.

All interested parties are invited to submit their views by January 20, 2009.
Canada-European Union Summit:
Prime Minister Stephen Harper has announced that Canada and the European Union have started working on an historic comprehensive economic agreement. Prime Minister Harper, French President Nicolas Sarkozy and European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso announced at the Oct. 17 Canada-EU Summit in Quebec City that Canada and the EU will prepare formal mandates with a view to launching negotiations on an economic partnership as early as possible in 2009. The study examines how various forms of trade liberalization would impact on both economies, although it makes no policy recommendations.
