Representatives of agriculture, food processing and distribution met Wednesday to discuss the rising cost of raw materials, according affecting them "badly" the food industry. The Federation of Enterprises of trade and distribution (FCD), the National Association of Food Industries (ANIA), the National Federation of farmers unions (FNSEA) and representatives of supermarkets in particular were present. This meeting served to analyse the causes and consequences of this increase for industry players, said ANIA in a statement, stressing that the increase "appears almost structural."
These increases are due to the succession of several years of poor harvests due to unusual weather conditions, use of agricultural raw materials for the development of ecological energy (biofuels) and the reduction or absence of stocks while global demand increases, according to ANIA. For ANIA, the food industry alone can not absorb the costs of these increases. It also calls on farmers, manufacturers and distributors to take their responsibilities to "minimise the part that will inevitably be passed on to consumers." "For its part, the French food industry takes its responsibilities and undertakes not to make any profit from the situation. Only those increases are justified, ie indispensable to the survival of enterprises will be passed," says the president of the association, Jean-Rene Buisson. "They will be calculated more just for the sake of transparency to our partners and in the interests of consumers". |
