Toronto East General Hospital is a teaching hospital located at 825 Coxwell Avenue in Toronto, Ontario, in the former borough of East York.
The hospital has 382 acute care beds, as well as 13 rehabilitation and 75 complex continuing care beds. In 2006/07, the hospital had over 60,000 emergency room visits and more than 19,000 in-patient admissions.[1]
Approximately 3,500 babies were delivered during this period at the hospital's Maternal Newborn and Child Health Centre, which provides Level II Maternity and Neonatal Care and is a regional paediatric centre of the Child Health Network of Toronto.[2]
The hospital's chief of staff is Dr. Alfio Meschino and its president and CEO is Rob Devitt.

Toronto East General Hospital (TEGH) plays a valuable role in the health care system, in the Toronto Central Local Health Integration Network (LHIN) and in South East Toronto as a large, urban, full-service community hospital. The 2007 external environment analysis illustrates the importance of the Hospital’s continued role in the delivery of outstanding primary and secondary level acute hospital services to its community and encourages the development of specific areas of clinical excellence. Furthermore, given the broad and general nature of the care provided at TEGH and the diverse urban community that it serves, the Hospital also has a unique and growing role in teaching health professionals and research.

 Clinical Service
TEGH will proudly continue its role as a full-service community hospital. In order for the Hospital to successfully fulfill its accountabilities, such as its clinical role in the provision of emergency services in the Toronto Central LHIN and its designation as the Provincial Centre of Excellence for Progressive Weaning, it is essential for TEGH to maintain the appropriate mix of acute subspecialties in addition to the continuum of ambulatory, inpatient and support services. TEGH will focus on providing a full range of excellent primary, secondary and limited tertiary (1) acute care services, as well as complex continuing care. This will allow TEGH to continue to play a critical role in ensuring that the academic health science centers and other health providers in the Toronto Central LHIN can focus on their respective core roles and accountabilities.

 Teaching

TEGH is highly regarded as an effective teaching hospital that generates some of the highest student satisfaction scores in Toronto. The Hospital is committed to working in partnership with universities and colleges to further enhance its contributions to health care education. With a new community teaching hospital affiliation agreement with the University of Toronto, and growth in the demand for education opportunities in generalist community environments, we will focus on maximizing our opportunity to be the leading community teaching hospital in Ontario.

 Research
TEGH has an opportunity to create a unique research niche given its role in delivering a full range of services to a diverse urban community. We will continue to pursue our goal to become the leader in community based clinical research (CBCR) in Ontario (2). Priority will be placed on further developing the leadership, support and infrastructure for research activities at TEGH and on coordinating and participating in research activities with other organizations.
