As a Catholic hospital, founded in 1892 by the Sisters of St. Joseph to care for the sick and the poor of Toronto's inner city, St. Michael's Hospital has a long and proud history of caring and compassion. Since 1892, we have preserved our commitment to compassion and excellence as we have evolved into a centre for innovation in patient care, teaching and research.
Today, St. Michael's Hospital is a world-renowned academic health science centre. Every year, our 4,800 staff and 600 physicians teach 1,800 students, perform 25,000 day surgeries, treat 600,000 patients in clinics, see 54,000 patients in the emergency room and provide round-the-clock care to 24,000 inpatients.
Fully affiliated with the University of Toronto, St. Michael's Hospital leads the way in clinical care, education and research in heart disease, trauma and critical care, neurosurgery, arthritis and osteoporosis, keyhole surgery, diabetes, cancer care and care of the homeless and vulnerable populations in the inner city. As the designated adult trauma centre for downtown Toronto and a major referral centre for Ontario, the Hospital treats the most critically ill and complex patients in the province.
St. Michael's Hospital is a Catholic teaching hospital in Downtown Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It offers tertiary and quaternary care for patients throughout Ontario.
It is unique in many areas and offers services in cardiovascular surgery, neurosurgery, inner city health and therapeutic endoscopy (after absorbing the Wellesley endoscopy group, which had to relocate when Wellesley Hospital was closed).
The hospital is located near the intersection of Queen Street and Yonge Street in Downtown Toronto, and because of its location, caters to a diverse population, that includes the posh condominium complexes in Harbourfront, the underprivileged of the inner city of Regent Park, and the gay and lesbian community in Church and Wellesley. The hospital has over 550 beds and extensive outpatient clinics.
The hospital is one of two major trauma centers in the Greater Toronto Area and is open 24 hours a day. The only other trauma centre is Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre.
The current Physician-in-Chief is Dr. Robert Hyland, the Surgeon-in-Chief is Dr. Ori Rotstein and the President is Jeffrey Lozon.
In 1892, in an old Baptist church on Bond Street, was Notre Dame des Anges, a boarding house for working women operated by the Sisters of St. Joseph. As with many other cities of its time, a diphtheria epidemic was sweeping Toronto and the hard-pressed medical officer of health issued an appeal to the Sisters. The Sisters answered the call to service and founded St. Michael's Hospital.
The Hospital began with a bed capacity of 26 and a staff of six doctors and four graduate nurses. Within a year, accommodation was increased to include two large wards and an emergency department. By 1912, bed capacity reached 300, and a five-room operating suite was added.

As early as 1894, St. Michael's Hospital received medical students and in 1920 negotiated a formal agreement with the faculty of medicine at the University of Toronto that continues to this day.
Between 1892 and 1974, St. Michael's school of nursing graduated 81 classes, totalling 5,177 graduates. The school was closed in 1974 when nursing education was moved into the community college system. Thereafter, the Hospital opened a school for medical record librarians, one of the first, and also participated in the preparation of dietitians and X-ray and laboratory technologists.
